English speaking course in Singapore
Berlitz Singapore’s English speaking course is for adults who understand English but want to speak it with more confidence and clarity. Our spoken English classes are private or semi-private, taught in English from day one by native-speaking or native-level instructors. Build fluency for meetings, presentations, interviews and everyday conversation, at our Orchard Road centre or online from anywhere in Singapore.
Who our spoken English classes are for
Most people who join an English speaking course already know the grammar and vocabulary. What they need is practice speaking in real situations. We start with a needs assessment of your goals, situation and current level, then build the course around the situations where you need to speak.
An English communication course for work
You follow meetings and read reports without trouble, then freeze when it's your turn to talk. We build the fluency to give updates, disagree politely, ask questions and think on your feet in English.
English for high-stakes speaking
Job interviews, client pitches, presentations and panel discussions. Structure what you want to say, deliver it clearly and handle questions, rehearsed with your instructor.
Be understood the first time
For speakers who get asked to repeat themselves. We work on the sounds, word stress and rhythm that make speech clearer to international listeners, without trying to erase your accent.
Switch easily into standard English
For Singaporeans who want to move comfortably between everyday Singlish and the standard English expected in client calls, international meetings and formal settings.
From “I can get by” to fluent
For non-native speakers who can hold a conversation but translate in their head, search for words or lose track when native speakers talk fast. Lessons are taught only in English, so you practise thinking in English rather than translating.
Spoken English for service and sales
Phone and video calls, handling complaints, explaining products and building rapport with international customers. Lessons use the conversations you actually have at work.
What you practise in our English speaking course
Every lesson is task-based with a specific speaking goal. Your instructor presents new content, you practise it, first guided and then freely, and then you perform it: a conversation, a role play or a short talk.
- Fluency. Speaking in longer, connected sentences with fewer pauses and less translating in your head.
- Pronunciation and clarity. Individual sounds, word stress, sentence rhythm and intonation, so listeners can follow you.
- Listening and responding. Following native speakers at normal speed and replying without delay.
- Conversation skills. Starting and keeping a conversation going, small talk, networking, turn-taking and polite interruption.
- Meetings and calls. Giving updates, asking questions, agreeing and disagreeing, and speaking up on video calls.
- Presentations and interviews. Structuring a talk, opening and closing strongly, and handling questions.
- Natural, accurate English. Common expressions and phrasal verbs, and the grammar mistakes that matter most when you speak.
- Progress reviews and testing. Regular reviews check you're on track, and a test measures your skills before you move up, with a Berlitz certificate when you complete each level.

English speaking course in Singapore: common questions
How is an English speaking course different from a general English course?
A general course covers speaking, listening, reading and writing evenly. An English speaking course (sometimes called a spoken English course) puts most of the lesson time into speaking and listening: conversation, role plays, presentations and pronunciation work. Grammar and vocabulary are taught as you need them to speak, not as separate topics.
Will the course change my accent?
The goal is clarity, not a new accent. Your instructor works on the specific sounds, stress and rhythm that cause listeners to misunderstand you.
I'm Singaporean and speak Singlish. Can this help?
Yes. Many students want to switch more easily into standard English for work, client calls and international meetings. Lessons practise those situations directly.
Is this an English communication course?
Yes. Speaking is the core, but lessons also cover listening, responding, and the communication skills that go with them: running a meeting, presenting, handling questions, small talk and phone or video calls. In a private course you choose the balance.
How quickly will my spoken English improve?
It depends on your starting level and how often you have lessons. We start with a needs assessment of your goals, situation and current level, and progress reviews check you're on track, with extra support if needed.
Can I prepare for a specific interview or presentation?
Yes. Bring the job description, your slides or your talking points, and your instructor will build lessons around rehearsing them, with feedback on content, delivery and how you handle questions.
I'm a beginner. Is this course right for me?
If you are starting from little or no English, see our English course for foreigners, or contact us and we'll assess your current level and recommend where to start.
Where are the spoken English classes held?
In person at 391B Orchard Road, #16-01 Ngee Ann City Tower B, Singapore 238874, on the 16th floor of Tower B (not Tower A, where Takashimaya is). Lessons are also available live online, so you can join from anywhere in Singapore.
Can I do lessons online instead?
Yes. Private and semi-private instruction are also available live online. Online fees are different: private from S1,800andsemi-privateS950. Contact us to arrange online lessons.
Can my company send a team?
Yes. See our corporate language training for corporate clients in Singapore, which can be delivered on-site at your workplace.
