Phonics classes in Singapore for preschoolers and kids
Berlitz Singapore runs English phonics classes for children from age 3, in small groups or one-to-one. Your child learns letter sounds, blending and segmenting, then moves into reading and writing real words and sentences. Lessons are led by trained, native English-speaking teachers using the Berlitz Method, so children speak, listen and read in English from the first lesson.

Phonics works best when it is matched to the child’s age and stage. We group children by reading level, not just age, so a fast 4-year-old and a 5-year-old starting fresh both get the right pace.
Toddlers and preschoolers
A gentle, play-based start: letter recognition, single letter sounds, listening games, songs and actions. Short activities and lots of movement, with a clear teaching sequence behind it.
Kindergarten children
Blending sounds into words, segmenting words into sounds, letter formation and the first “tricky words”. Children start reading simple sentences on their own and are ready for Primary 1 English.
Reading classes for lower primary
For children who know their letters but read slowly, guess at words or avoid reading aloud. We fill the gaps in sound knowledge, then build fluency, comprehension and spelling.
Older beginners in English
Children and teens new to English, including those who have just moved to Singapore, can start here before joining our general kids’ English courses.
What your child learns in our English phonics class
Every lesson follows a sequence, so parents can see what was covered and what comes next.
- Letter sounds. All single consonant and vowel sounds, taught in a proven sequence.
- Blending. Pushing sounds together to read words (c-a-t → cat).
- Segmenting. Breaking words into sounds so children can spell what they hear.
- Digraphs and tricky words. sh, ch, th, ee, oo and the high-frequency words that must be learnt by sight.
- Letter formation and writing. Handwriting is taught alongside reading, so writing skills develop at the same time.
- Reading and comprehension. From decoding single words to reading short texts with understanding.
- Pronunciation. Clear, natural English sounds from native-speaking teachers, corrected early before habits set in.

Phonics classes in Singapore: common questions from parents
What age should my child start phonics?
Most children are ready between 3 and 4, once they can sit for short activities and are showing interest in letters. Starting before Primary 1 gives the most benefit, but children of 6 or 7 who read slowly or guess at words still gain a lot from a structured phonics course.
What is the difference between a phonics class and a reading class?
Phonics teaches the sounds and how to decode words. Reading classes build on that with fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Our programme covers both in one sequence: children start with phonics and move into reading as soon as they can decode.
Is this a phonics playgroup or a proper class?
It is a taught class with a fixed curriculum, delivered in a playful way for younger children. Songs, actions and games are there to hold attention, but every lesson has a learning goal.
How many lessons does my child need?
Most beginners complete the core phonics sequence in 40 lessons. Children who already know some letter sounds, or who join for reading support, often start with the 20-lesson package. Your Program Advisor will recommend a package after a short placement chat.

My child already goes to preschool. Is phonics tuition still useful?
Yes. Preschools cover phonics at group pace, often in a class of 20 or more. A small-group class lets the teacher hear and correct every child’s sounds and blending, which is where most reading problems start.
